On Saturday, November 19th RRFF held it's first "Learn to Fly Fish" event at Eisenhower State Park. We had approximately 40 folks attend the event. We had 6 training stations set up.

* - Fly Tying
* - Knot Tying
* - Entomology & Bug Picking
* - Safety, Rules, and Ethics
* - Basic Fly Fishing Equipment
* - Basic 4 part casting instruction

After all the participants had completed all stations we had a hot dog lunch and then we headed to the lake to let the participants try their hand at catching a fish on "the fly". Approximately 30 folks went to the water with us. Only one participant caught a fish but all had a good time.

RED RIVER RENDEZVOUS

January 20th - 22nd, 2012 will be the dates of the 1st Annual Red River Rendezvous. This is the event formerly known as the Texoma Tie In. We are moving this event to Bonham State Park in order to provide on site heated cabins for all participants. The group barrack area has 5 cabins with a total of 94 bunks. Participants can stay on site and enjoy three days of fly tying, fly fishing, and other fun activities. This will be an informal event with NO time schedules and NO agendas. You can get up when you want, tie when you want, fish when you want, eat when you want. We are hoping for 50 to 100 fly tyers from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and who knows where. This is a homecoming for fly tyers. There will be door prize drawings and a silent auction. We're hoping the weather will cooperate and we can have a fly casting obstacle course. Meals are pot-luck style. We ask each person to bring a sufficient amount of food for the weekend and we will prepare meals from those dishes to feed everyone.
We hope to see you all there.

Carolyn, Jim, John, Lee, Greg, and Jerry

Blue River Trout Derby

Carolyn and Jerry went to the Annual Blue River Trout Derby in Tishomingo, Oklahoma last Saturday. They tied flies and talked with folks about fly fishing, fly tying, FFF, our club and what it does, and the upcoming Red River Rendezvous.

There were approximately 200 people in attendance so we had lots of folks to chat with. The biggest trout caught on Saturday was 6 pounds and 11 ounces. That was one big trout.

Fishing GTG this coming Saturday (July 16th)

Okay guys, it's HOT so that means early morning or late evening fishing.
We're going to shoot for early morning this Saturday at Waterloo Lake in
Denison. The plan is to start around 6:30 AM and fish until around 10:30 AM.
But, come when you want and leave when you want is the real deal.

Waterloo is best fished from a yak, canoe, kick-boat, etc. but can be fished from the bank.There are large mouth bass, crappie, sand bass, and various sunfish in the lake.Early in the day poppers and foam creatures work best and as it heats up subsurface flies such as cap spiders, wooly buggers (#10 & 12) in olive and black, etc. are the preferred menu items. 2 to 5 wt rods are perfect.

Hope to see you there!

Learn to Fish Event at Eisenhower SP

The final Learn to Fish Event of 2011 was held Saturday morning at Eisenhower State Park. The event kicked off at 8:30 with registration followed by a 45 minute angler education session before we met at the boathouse to fish.

We had a great turn out.

Special "THANKS" to a great group of volunteers for an awesome year of Angler Education.

Fishing GTG Today

A group of us met up this morning, Had breakfast at McDonald's, and headed to the lake. We had an opportunity to fish a large private lake. Fishing was really good. Greg kicked it off with a dozen or so bass and bluegill. Jerry joined in and caught a few. Then John got in on the action. Lee paddled over to see if the rest of us were doing any good and he started catching some. Lee paddled a short distance from us then hollered and when we looked his rod was bent double. He landed a 14 inch large mouth bass. It was a great day on the water and we are very thankful to the landowner for the opportunity to fish their lake.

July Presentation - "Fly Fishing the Paluxy River"

We will have a top notch presentation on the Paluxy River (The "P") by Sean Polk.

The Paluxy River is the hidden gem of North Texas Rivers. Often talked about in fly fishing circles, but rarely fished, the Paluxy offers top notch fly fishing within hours of the Metroplex. The clear waters of the Paluxy hold numerous pan fish and bass, along with healthy populations of hard fighting river carp. Sean will talk about access points, flies, times to fish, and techniques for catching.

Sean Polk has a life long passion of pursuing fish. Whether it's chasing redfish in the shallow flats of south Texas, trout in Arkansas, or bass in the clear rivers of Texas, he is constantly on the water fly fishing.
His experiences have taken to Belize, the Pacific Northwest, the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Colorado, New Mexico, Vermont, and Florida. Sean started fly fishing at a young age, spending his summers fishing stock tanks and the Gulf of Mexico with his grandfathers. His dad introduced him to fly fishing and he has never looked back. Whether it is tying new patterns at the bench, teaching others to cast, or exploring new waters Sean is always looking at ways to expand his knowledge of the sport.

This is one you don't want to miss.
